One of the many perks of being an educator in a cosmetology school is that you get to do your part in shaping our industry’s future. I think it is so important that while they are in school with me, that I do my best to influence them in a positive way. I don’t just mean by being a good role model, teaching them how to do hair, or instilling professionalism...it
goes deeper than that. With all of the Social media platforms, cosmetology students have education at their fingertips 24/7. There is no doubt that the internet is FULL of beautiful images of hair, step by step tutorials, and advanced education for the masses. With millions of hairdressers and salons sharing daily on their own social media accounts, I find it beneficial for my students to have a few that they can turn to for inspiration and pure knowledge. I’m going to share my top ten Instagram accounts to follow if you are just starting your career in cosmetology or even if you are an educator and want to share with your own students.
DJ Muldoon @danieljosephmuldoon
He often references the phrase #knowledgedestroysfear and he’s right...the more you know the more confident you can be. His approach is simplistic yet fundamental. Tutorials, plenty of Instagram lives, and he even has classes you can attend or purchase online to watch in your own time!
Julian Perlingiero @julianperl
Tons of cutting tutorials. Super thorough explanations, and if you are learning on a pivot point curriculum, you will be able to follow along perfectly.
Ok , this girl does everything. Probably some of the cleanest color work I’ve ever seen done before. Fashion color , balayage, color melts . She nails it all.
Mona Baltazar @themonacut
So mona is the queen of cutting curly hair. Super cool, original, and killer technique.
Jacob Khan @jacobkhan
Salon owner / educator based in Atlanta. Super competitive city to work in but let me tell you, he just kills it. So many tutorials on cut and color techniques, he does hysterical voice over commentary on his videos, almost daily posts of real time clients he’s working on in the salon. He shares salon reality and always takes you along for the ride when he is out educating hairdressers all over the U.S. Entertaining and educational all in one!
Shannel Mariano @shannelmariano
Probably the most organized educator I’ve even seen in my life. I got to see her teach in Connecticut a couple of months ago and she blew me away. She comes equipped with flip charts perfectly planned out to go over exactly what she wants to teach you.
Her Instagram is full of incredible visuals, which is helpful for most of us !
Tippi Shorter @tippishorter
She is a self proclaimed beauty expert and definitely a texture expert. Her page is full of beautiful hair and nothing but uplifting positivity!
Josh Demarco @hairdemarco
Owner of a kick ass barber shop in Philly, Josh has got some serious skill. Precision cutting with a creative edge to it. His style is nothing short of dapper , ironically that’s the name of his shop! (But spelled DAPR)
You can follow them too at @staydapr.
Jane Edo @jayne_edosalon
Without a doubt, fringe and shags are here to stay and Jayne does it best. I stumbled across her page a few years ago when the shag started making its comeback. Jayne is a salon owner and educator, that cuts with a razor like a hot knife on buttahhh, so smoooooth!
Bianca Hillier @biancacolour
What I like about Bianca is that her stories always reflect what she is currently posting. So she may post a photo of her latest work, but in her “stories” she will often post her step by step application, color and toning formulations, and finishing work. You’ll find all of this in between her glorious vacation and beach photos , which are equally as beautiful!
As I write this, more and more talented hairdressers come to mind, but hey, let’s keep it simple for now . Give them all a follow and make your Instagram feed more stimulating!
Stay tuned for more curated lists of ig's to follow!
